Browns Head Lighthouse is located near the northwest corner of Vinalhaven Island to guide boats through the Fox Islands. The station was established in 1832 when the first tower was constructed of rubblestone. The original tower was 22 feet tall, and 42 feet above mean high water. The present lighthouse is a cylindrical brick tower and was built in 1857. Ownership of the Browns Head Lighthouse was transferred to the town of Vinalhaven in 1998, and then in 2015 ownership was transferred to the American Lighthouse Foundation. The lighthouse is currently operational. The station grounds are open to the public, but the tower and lighthouse keeper’s house are not.
